Putting the Brakes on Landslides
Terzaghi's principle of effective stress and limit equilibrium methods are commonly used in engineering practice to assess the stability of slopes for saturated and dry conditions. In recent decades, however, this approach has been extended to unsaturated soil conditions by using the suction-stress-based effective stress. For example, it's been used to analyze and predict rainfall-induced slope failures along railway embankments at sites near Edmonds, Wash. It's also been successfully used at other sites to assess hurricane induced slope instability in Asheville, N.C., natural rainfall-induced failures of cut slopes near Hadong City and Puhang City in South Korea, the excess precipitation-induced slope failures near the village of Rüdlingen in northern Switzerland, and rainfall-induced slope failures in the northeastern part of Oltrepò Pavese in northern Italy, among others.
