The Testing of a Full-Scale Stub-Girder Floor Beam Using 'SLIMDEK' Construction
An experimental investigation on a novel stub-girder system, incorporating the Slimdek concept, is discussed. The test results from a full-scale 12.6 m span prototype composite girder, which was load tested to a mid-span deflexion of span/44 (i.e., 285 mm) at the University of Cambridge Engineering Department, show that this structural solution has great potential for spans in the 12 to 20 m range; where a high degree of service integration is often demanded. Particular advantages inherent within this structural concept are that: explicit mechanical shear connexion between the girder and the concrete slab is eliminated; unpropped construction may be adopted; and, due to the long-spanning capabilities of the deep composite slab, secondary beams may be eliminated.
