An Integrated Approach for a Combined Sewer System and a Sequencing Batch Reactor Plant
Until now, most sewer systems in Germany as well as wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are designed and operated in a static way. This means, e.g., that the maximum flow rate to the WWTP must be throttled to a fixed value of approximately twice the peak dry weather flow rate (PDWF). A disadvantage of this method is that combined sewer overflows (CSO) can occur, even if there are still free storage and/or treatment capacities within the sewer system and the WWTP. One can find several examples for integrated approaches in literature. In contrast to most of the other publications referring to continuous flow systems, this paper will present first results of a research project, which has been initiated to realise an integrated operation of a sewer system and a sequencing batch reactor plant (SBR) in the German township Messel.
