Reinforcement Requirements for Secondary Composite Beams Incorporating Trapezoidal Decking
Secondary composite beams incorporating trapezoidal profiled steel sheeting laid transverse to the longitudinal axis of the steel beam can exhibit unwanted brittle failure modes with low stud strength and poor ductility. Tests in Australia have identified a special type of longitudinal shear failure occurring in the concrete flange over the top of the sheeting ribs. As a consequence, it is mandatory in Australian Standard AS 2327.1 "Simply-Supported Composite Beams" to provide a waveform reinforcing component to prevent this shear failure. Further tests have confirmed the occurrence of brittle concrete pull-out failure, which is particularly prevalent when pairs of studs instead of single studs are used in each pan. The same waveform reinforcing component can be used effectively to prevent pull-out failure, which results in increased stud strengths and much improved ductility.
