Integrated Sustainable Underground Space Development
The rapid economic growth in cities now warrants the development of the underground space. Planners and engineers have faced many challenges in the construction and expansion of overcrowded cities. This paper presents a new concept that highlights the importance of the underground environment development by combining the aboveground and the underground structures to form a whole sustainable space. In order to understand how the adaptation of an integrated sustainable underground space development can change the overall performance of a city, the current state of Shanghai underground space is briefly analyzed.
