History and Status of Women in Civil Engineering Academia
Women are becoming less of a rarity in civil engineering faculty within the past twenty years, but there remain unresolved issues keeping the numbers relatively low. This article presents a brief history of women in the profession and discusses some of the issues affecting women in civil engineering, particularly in academia. A survey was composed and distributed to female faculty from ASCE Region Four and Five schools. This data includes demographics, status of mentoring, views on job satisfaction and feelings of inclusion in a male-dominated arena. As females show progress in academia it is theorized that the numbers of female students will also increase, thus strengthening engineering profession.
