Maximum Stresses in Bascule Trusses
To the best of the writer’s knowledge, nothing has been published on the subject of the maximum dead stresses in the trusses of bascule bridges, of the trunnion, rolling lift, or combination types, and, as a result, several instances have come to his notice where the stress sheet showed only the dead stresses for the bridge closed, and not the maximum stresses. In one case the true stress was three times the stress shown, though, fortunately, in this particular member, this was not the governing stress. There were several members, however, where the dead stress was the governing one, and in some of these the section had to be increased about 6 per cent.
