Leveraging Alternative Technical Concept for Contract Delivery of Accelerated Bridge Construction
Early contractor involvement in Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) projects has several benefits including cost savings, reduced traffic disturbance as well as construction time and nurturing the adoption of innovation methods in construction. Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC) is one method of early contractor involvement to propose modifications to contract requirements before the bidding or proposal process. This study investigates the ABC projects’ performance utilizing ATCs in contract delivery by conducting interviews to project stakeholders involved with most of the ABC projects in the US that integrated ATCs. The obtained data are analyzed to develop: (1) a framework of streamline procedure for integration of ATCs in different ABC projects; and (2) a regression model demonstrating the factors impacting cost savings in ATC-based ABC projects. The results indicated that the proposed framework would facilitate stakeholders in decision-making for ATC adoption in ABC projects. The regression model showed that ATCs approved with conditions positively influence cost savings in ABC projects.
