A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
During the past year the averaging machine, illnstrated by Plate XXIII of Vol. X, has been remodeled and is now presented in a more compact and useful form, with wider range and greater capacity. In, the original design, the representative weights on the platform were exactly balanced by equal weights in the scale pan, on the opposite side of the fulcrum. In the present device, the scale pan has been discarded and the representaitve weights are made to balance themselves over a common fulcrum a a. By this means the weights handled are reduced. one-half in amount, and the chances of error greatly diminished.
