Achieving Innovation in Facades
Several factors stymie the successful integration of the design, the construction and the operation of building facades in today's construction industry. They also limit the potential for introducing innovative products and processes into facades. These factors include: a limited understanding of what façade design entails, unclear definitions of when façade issues should be addressed, identifying who is best suited to take responsibility for them and barriers drawn by contractual lines inhibiting how best to incorporate them. This paper will outline the importance of façades and the roles and responsibilities within the discipline of façade engineering. It will explain how façade engineers, through various contractual arrangements, assist the project team to introduce innovation into design, construction and operation and how they help to achieve integrated and innovative buildings by assuming the responsibility of technical guardianship.
