Analysis and Simulation of Interlayer Damages in Asphalt Pavement Overlay Cement Concrete Slab
Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement was a major type of pavement in China during the early age of road construction. Most of those early pavements are past due for rehabilitation or reconstruction. The common method of rehabilitation is asphalt pavement (AC) overlays. One of the questions that AC overlay PCC will face is the interlayer damage between layers, which is still a research interest for many researchers. In this paper, micro-mechanical-based discrete element methods were employed to evaluate the interlayer damages of structure of AC overlay PCC. The definition of interlayer condition was considered first, then a 2D discrete element model, which was employed to simulate the interlayer damage, was established based on Particle Flow Codes (PFC). The response of pavement structure was discussed at different interlayer conditions. Finally, some explanations related to the results were given which might be of help in understanding interlayer damage for AC overlay PCC, as well as in similar situations, such as asphalt pavements for concrete bridge decks.
