Removable Compressive Load Distributive Strand Anchors: Case History and Lessons Learned
Removable compressive and distributive strand anchors were successfully used to anchor portions of the temporary support of excavation for the Hudson Yards development in Manhattan, New York. The removable strand anchors were implemented in lieu of conventional anchors to allow future excavation for a cut-and-cover tunnel and caissons. This paper describes the principles of removable compressive and distributive anchors, the installation and testing methods typically used, and the de-tensioning and removal procedures for the anchors. This paper also discusses lessons learned from the installation, testing, and removal of the anchors at Hudson Yards. The anchors used at Hudson Yards were bonded in bedrock. The findings from this study may prove useful to engineers considering the use of removable compressive and load distributive strand anchors for temporary support of excavation systems.
