New Applications to Determine Subsurface Characteristics and Contaminants
This paper presents innovative site characterization techniques and illustrates the benefits realized when cone penetrometer technology is used in combination with environmental sensors. Specifically, the application of Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) in conjunction with Fugro's Rapid Optical Screening Tool (ROSTTM) and Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) is explored. Detailed descriptions of how each tool functions are included, along with explanations of how the data collected through each method works together toward a common purpose. Results from investigations at various sites throughout the United States prove that these applications effectively identify areas of impacted soil and groundwater, enabling focused remedial efforts. In the end, these techniques are a quicker and more cost-effective solution over traditional testing methods.
