The flow in an ice-affected river can be calculated using the open-water Chezy equation and ignoring the presence of ice if a corrective coefficient for Chezy's C is introduced to take into account the ice effects. Analysis of the data from the Beauharnois Canal shows that the corrective coefficient follows a well-defined trend during the ice season. Frazil presence is found to be the most important factor in affecting the resistance of the river. A small amount of frazil ice in the water can reduce the flow by 50 percent. The approach proposed in this study has the advantage over the currently popular approach of using the Manning equation and the composite Manning's n because it can deal with situations when a river is only partially ice covered or is frazil affected. It also avoids the situation of having to choose one from many formulae for evaluating the composite Manning's n. By using the corrective coefficient curve derived from the study, an alternative ice management procedure seems possible which may lead to higher power production.
