Multiscale Modeling of Heterogenous AC and Damage Quantification
This study evaluates the damage in the Asphalt concrete (AC) layer based on the field instrumentation response, nondestructive testing (NDT), and multiscale finite element modeling (MsFEM). During the design period, a pavement has to withstand damages occurring from environmental and traffic loadings. This study demonstrates a methodology of quantifying these damages in the AC layer. AC layer damage due to only class 9 vehicles is compared with the total damage as it comprises more than two-third of the total traffic passing through the instrumentation section at Interstate 40 (I-40). The results show that loads from the class 9 vehicle alone cause around 43% of the total damage for the period 2016–2017. Moreover, MsFEM analysis shows that fatigue damage in the microscale AC is almost eight times higher compared to the macroscale AC.
