Method for Identifying Bridge Collapse Pattern: Theoretical Analysis
A method for identifying the collapse patterns of continuous girder bridges and single-pylon cable-stayed bridges was developed on the basis of the limit analysis theorem. First, collapse models of continuous girder bridges and single-pylon cable-stayed bridges were established. These models are characterized by the parameters of damage locations and displacements. The damaged components and their failure modes, which form the partial/complete collapse patterns of the bridges, were then determined on the basis of limit analysis theorem. The ultimate load-bearing capacities of the bridges were also obtained. Compared with the finite element analysis method, the proposed approach can be used to effectively identify collapse patterns and calculate ultimate load-bearing capacity during the conceptual design of bridges. The results can serve as a scientific foundation for assessing a bridge’s ultimate performance, proposing hazard mitigation concepts, and implementing effective bridge disaster reduction techniques.
