A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Berkeley's A/E/C Collaborative Design Studio
In an effort to impart the social experience of designing buildings to students, several universities have developed curricula that simulates collaborative A/E/C design. Many of these experiments, which take the form of a design studio, fail to impart to the participating students the contemporaneous nature of a truly collaborative project. Careful analysis of the causes for this failure led us to identify the nature of the project as the critical factor for the success of the intended pedagogy. To remedy this situation, we have chosen as project the adaptive re-use and seismic retrofit of an existing facility, rather than the design of a new building, thereby forcing the contemporaneous exploration of a design problem by architecture, structural engineering, and construction management students. This paper describes the experiment, and analyzes its merits in relationship to typical collaborative design exercises
