Stresses around Circular Holes in Dams and Buttresses
Cracks that have been observed in dams have sometimes been attributed to the presence of drainage or inspection galleries which are parallel or transverse to the axis of the dam. Some observers have stated that these cracks generally start from the gallery and in some cases travel to both down-stream and up-stream faces, thus dividing the structure into two or more parts. In other cases these cracks are purely local and extend only a short distance from the gallery into the m a in part of the dam. Both these types of cracks can be observed on the faces of buttresses.
