Synthetic Hydrologic Information - A Case Study
Methodologies are developed for generating synthetic hydrologic information in respect to weekly flows, precipitation on and evaporation from the lake surfaces, and navigation flow requirements to investigate: 1) the range of response with the optimal joint operation (derived with the historical data) of the Shelbyville and Carlyle Lakes in Illinois and 2) any desirable improvements in operation. A two-distribution model is shown to be better than the Pearson or normal distribution model for generating monthly streamflows. A method for filtering outliers is predicated on the basis of hydrometeorology and rainfall-runoff phenomenon. A disaggregation procedure is formulated for converting monthly flows to weekly flows. Markov models are used successfully in generating monthly precipitation on and evaporation from the lake surfaces. The weekly navigation-flow requirements are simulated by a third-order Markov chain.
