Assessment of Old Stone Walls
Stone retaining walls over a century old are common in the New York Metropolitan area. Some of these walls are dry (no mortar). The 2005 failure of the stone wall along Riverside Drive in New York City blocked the Henry Hudson Parkway in both directions and the reason for failure was attributed to blocked weep holes buildup and of water pressure which in hindsight could have been possible to relieve. Unlike reinforced concrete walls, stone walls (especially dry walls) have no tensile resistance and the modes of failure therefore, are different. Some stone walls are less than 1 m in thickness and owe their stability to rock ledges behind the wall that produces a silo effect. In this paper, published literature on the performance of stone retaining walls is reviewed with respect to stability assessment and mechanical properties of stone walls. Case histories are described illustrating the key issues in assessing the stability of existing stone walls. Methodologies for the stability analysis of existing walls are presented.
