A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The Leadership Flexibility Space
Leadership styles of engineers were studied in a state organization, with the objective of making recommendations for improvement in decision making. A model was synthesized from a critical review of relevant literature, the underlying principles of which have found wide acceptance. Five styles were modeled in an outcome space — complete autocrat, impoverished manager, consensus manager, active manager, and consultative autocrat. The data collection process consisted of a questionnaire plus qualitative interviews. The research method included t-tests for the distance from the active manager's zone, and recording of trends and frequencies of qualitative data. Effects on styles were measured by variables such as years of experience and number of projects handled. Among the results, only one in twelve was an active manager, while more than 50% fell in the impoverished manager's region. The contributions contained ten recommendations that would take the organization to the next level by adopting a cross-section of motivational strategies.
