Behavior of Caisson Foundations under Lateral Loading in Layered Cohesive Soil
Large diameter caissons used as bridge foundations are generally subjected to transverse loading in terms of horizontal load and overturning moment. Present study demonstrated the moment capacity of caisson foundations embedded in layered cohesive soil by adapting 3D numerical analysis. Validation of the numerical methodology with load test data for layered soil was performed. Effect of several important parameters such as interface roughness conditions and height-to-diameter ratio on the lateral soil reaction profiles for both homogeneous and non-homogeneous soil was investigated. Kinematic mechanisms at failure for different coupling conditions of sliding and rotation of the foundation due to applied lateral load have been discussed in detail. Variation of the depth of rotation for different conditions under lateral loading also has been highlighted in the present analysis.
