Resistance of Soft Fill to Static Wheel Loads
The mathematics of stress in an elastic body, under a load system applied at the surface of the body, is outlined in this paper. The principles are applied to the construction of airplane runways upon a plastic mud fill, to resist airplane wheel loads and to control the placing of granular fill upon the mud. Finally, the paper shows the practical application of the mathematics to the construction of the landing field of the Baltimore (Md.) Municipal Airport.
