Interface Friction of a Geomembrane with a Fiber Reinforced Soil
A series of direct shear experiments were performed to examine the interface friction between fiber reinforced soils and a geomembrane. The soil used in this study classified as a clayey sand (SC) according to the USCS. The tests were performed in a standard direct shear device. The soil was compacted and tested at its optimum moisture content with varying dosages of fibers. Dosage rates of 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% by dry weight were used. This work was performed by an undergraduate for credit as part of a new undergraduate research class at Villanova. The results indicate that to maximize shear strength, there is an optimum dosage rate of 0.2%. As this work was a preliminary study, there is still much research to be completed in this area. For example, additional tests should be conducted in large, 30.5 cm direct shear devices and additional tests on textured geomembranes and other soils are recommended.
