Advancements in Data Acquisition-Based Design for Drilled Displacement Piles
The authors described the equipment and processes involved in the measurement of the effort expended by the drilling platform in the installation of Drilled Displacement (DD) piles (called Installation Effort or IE) in a paper presented at the 2006 ASCE GeoCongress (NeSmith and NeSmith, 2006a). The use of IE as an indicator of stratigraphy and DD pile capacity was addressed in a companion paper (NeSmith and NeSmith, 2006b). Recent advances in this area include improvements in the acquisition of data required to calculate IE; enhancements in the real time presentation of IE data during pile installation; modifications to the calculation of IE and Cumulative IE; and refinements in the relationship between Cumulative IE and pile capacity. These developments have facilitated the application of IE as a practical tool for DD pile design and for quality control of DD pile installation. The advances mentioned above are discussed herein and include comments on site characterization, an overview of design methodology, recommendations for test pile programs, and use of the database of Installation Effort vs. Capacity collected by the authors.
