Design and Construction for Dense Urban Areas — Structural Engineering Challenges in NYC
The historical high building density in New York City resulted in narrow structures that are sensitive to both underpinning and demolition operations. Presently these operations are dominated by methods based on empirical approaches. The paper discusses the use of engineering analysis to reduce damage to adjoining brownstones or tenement buildings during demolition and specially underpinning. The author has investigated a number of recent construction failures and has concluded that engineering evaluation, calculations and analysis can improve traditional methods. He presents the broad lines of a methodology to identify the buildings most likely to suffer during underpinning and demolition. The methodology can justify installation of protection measures prior to the start of construction operations.
