The distinction between surge tanks for acceleration and deceleration is shown, and likewise the distinction between the requirements for medium high-head plants and for high-head plants. Tests of the Kerckhoff surge tank are presented, and the computed values are shown to agree closely with the tests. The tests show the rapid dampening of the surge that took place. The mathematical formulas are developed in the Appendices.
