A New Shape Memory Polyurethane Sealant of Concrete Pavement Joint
Sealant is widely used in the construction of buildings and traffic infrastructure. Expansion joint failure is a significant contributing factor to concrete pavement damage. To effectively seal expansion joints to concrete pavement, a novel shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) sealant was developed in this study. A systematic test program was implemented, including glass transition temperature determination by differential scanning calorimetry analysis, the shape memory properties after uniaxial tension programing, and shape recovery with SEM. During the shape memory cycle process, the thermal and mechanical properties were investigated for shape recovery. The results indicate that the tailored Tt of prepared SMPU can be used as the shape memory switching temperature to match its working temperature, the prepared SMPU has a satisfactory shape memory effect and the programming can improve the mechanical, the recovered SMPU shows a little molecular damage because of the programming of the SMPU. It is concluded that the synthesized SMPU with the specially tailored Tt is suitable to use as a sealant of concrete pavement joints.
