Passive Reactive Berm to Provide Low Maintenance Lead Containment
A program was conducted to determine the viability of containing metallic residue from firing ranges by treating the range area chemically to allow passive blocking of the contaminants in sand, a technique called passive reactive berm (PRBermTM). Materials used in the PRBermTM maintain near neutral soil conditions and promoting immobilization of metals. The PRBermTM has the potential to provide a very useful, low cost tool for defense forces to maintain active firing ranges while managing the inevitable effects of munition residue in a low cost and effective manner.
