Two-Dimensional Shrink-Swell Model for Pavement Surface Movement Prediction
A two-dimensional shrink-swell model is presented in the paper to address the problem of moisture flow and associated soil deformation due to seasonal cycles of wetting and drying in expansive soil mass. The numerical model performs the surface vertical movement prediction in a manner of sequentially coupled flow-displacement analysis approach. The theoretical formulations of moisture flow and stress-strain components of this model are first described, while the log-linear Mitchell equation is employed for the moisture diffusion computation and elastic Young's Modulus E is expressed as a function of matric suction hm and net mechanical stress δm. An example problem of surface swelling-shrinkage calculation is given to illustrate the proposed shrink-swell model and the use of a finite element computer program FLODEF which is developed based on this model.
