Probabilistic Liquefied Shear Strength
Liquefaction of loose cohesionless soils can have detrimental effects on the stability of ground. The residual or liquefied strength of liquefiable soils is an important parameter when evaluating stability. Current procedures for estimating the liquefied strength are based on laboratory testing or from back-analysis of failures. Available procedures utilize deterministic methods for estimating the liquefied strength. This study presents procedures for assessing the liquefied strength within a probabilistic framework. Slope stability procedures using Monte Carlo Simulations are developed for the back-analysis. An existing liquefied shear strength relationship is then analyzed with the Hasofer-Lind Reliability Index method and several failures.
