Integrated Geotechnical Design Experience
This paper describes an integrated soils and foundations course, soils laboratory, and capstone design course in which all cadets (students) were working toward a common goal of designing a "real-world" project. Site selection and project planning was kicked-off in the fall semester by a small group of seniors, who later acted as group leaders for the capstone design course in the spring semester. Juniors in the soils and foundations course got involved by excavating test pits, collecting and testing soils, and acting as consultants in designing foundations. Thus, the project was integrated into three courses over two semesters and included both junior and senior-level students. All cadets were involved in briefing academy officers and potential project donors leading to a $500,000 private donation.
