Trenchless Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation without Bypass Pumping or Utility Relocation
The Novato Sanitary District (District) is rehabilitating their 27-inch and 36-inch diameter Main Interceptor Sewer using trenchless rehabilitation methods that do not require bypass pumping. A portion of the project was completed as a pilot project, using a machine spiral wound poly vinyl chloride (PVC) liner that was installed through existing manholes without any excavation, bypass pumping, or significant impacts to residents. This paper will summarize the evaluation of various alternatives for rehabilitation, design considerations, options for bidding, and present photographs of the rehabilitation construction. Specific issues to be addressed during the project include limited site access, crossing an existing railroad track that constrains bypass pumping, construction through easements across a nicely landscaped residential property, coordination with the City of Novato's (City) pavement project, and utility relocation requirements for some of the rehabilitation methods.
