Prestressed Concrete Box Beams with Curved Soffits

This project involved the reconstruction and widening of a four kilometer (2.5-mile) stretch of the Northern State Parkway between the Meadowbrook Parkway and the Wantagh Parkway in Long Island, New York, including the replacement of six stone faced arched bridges, for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). One of the primary challenges of this project was to preserve the character of the original stone-faced arches in this stretch of the parkway. This paper presents the development, design and construction of these replacement bridges using stone-faced precast, prestressed concrete box beams with curved soffits.
