Chautauqua, N. Y., Sewage Disposal Works
Chautauqua, N. Y., is a well-known summer resort on the southwest shore of Chautauqua Lake. The grounds run over a mile along the lake shore, and extend back from the lake for half a mile. There are about 10 miles of streets and avenues through which water pipes were laid several years ago. Prior to 1893 the sanitary arrangements of the grounds were very crude. Public crematory closets were placed at various points, and cesspools were largely used as a means of disposing of the kitchen wastes. The rough garbage was drawn to the southern part of the grounds by the authorities, dried and burned.
