Hybrid Penetration for Geotechnical Site Investigation
Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) is a flexible and cost effectiveness in situ characterization technique, able to determine a wide array of subsurface properties and conditions with fine spatial resolution. However, refusal of the probe at shallower than desired depths has remained a limitation in difficult geologies. The Enhanced Access Penetrometer System (EAPS) combines CPT sounding with small-diameter, air rotary drilling to cut through refusal layers. The ability to alternate between penetration modes maximize the data obtained. An integral larger drill and an innovative spoils containment and sampling system which provide additional benefits are also described.
