Testing of Instrumented Construction Mats and Billets
The objective of this paper is to present the results of instrumented testing performed on wood structural composite lumber mats and billets, as well as to briefly discuss preliminary modeling efforts to be used in quantification of their system behavior. A rigorous experimental program was undertaken where 167 single billets and 28 mats were tested in third point bending according to ASTM 5456 (slightly modified for mats). Just over one third of these mats were instrumented with foil strain gages (approximately 70 total strain measurements were obtained at 13 locations on the mats) to provide insight into the composite behaviors. The mats appear to be very ductile and the strain measurements demonstrate the load transfer behavior differences as the load increases. Strain readings also showed significant amounts of relaxation at higher loads, a desirable behavior for sustained loading.
