Team OCEAN: Naturalist Corps Volunteers Promote Stewardship for the Marine Sanctuary
Over 100,000 tourists, school children, and local residents visit NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) annually on board local whale watch vessels, marine floating classrooms, and natural history tours. In response to these large numbers of Sanctuary visitors CINMS launched the Sanctuary Naturalist Corps program in 2001. This program was created to educate the community about the Sanctuary and provide an on-board resource for people with questions about the Channel Islands and the abundance and diversity of marine life found in the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary Naturalist Corps is a dual-county program, encompassing both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, that recruits and trains volunteers to represent the Sanctuary on board local whale watch vessels departing out of Santa Barbara Harbor, Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor. In addition to educating passengers on these tours, Sanctuary Naturalist Corps volunteers play an important role in monitoring sanctuary resources, collecting data on marine mammals, marine debris, and vessel traffic in CINMS.
