Analogue Procedure for Determination of Virtual Mass
An experimental procedure for determination of added (virtual) mass of bodies accelerating within a fluid is described. The procedure is shown to be accurate, and it enables the full pressure distribution to be determined. Examples, such as the added mass of cubes, plates, and cylinders accelerating near a free surface of fluid, are cited. A more complex application to ship motion is also illustrated, and the results, compared to standard approximate procedure, show these to be inaccurate.
