Discrete Element Analysis of an Underground Opening in Blocky Rock: An Investigation of the Differences between UDEC and DDA Results
In a previous study, two different discrete element methods (UDEC and DDA) were used to characterize the behavior of a blocky rock mass containing a rectangular-shaped underground opening. In eleven of the fifteen cases studied, both methods produced identical or very similar results. This paper presents the results of a follow-up study focussed on investigating the four cases in which the methods predicted drastically different behavior of the rock mass.
