Stability of Frames in the Presence of Primary Bending Moments
A systematic method of analyzing the stability of frames against sidesway buckling is developed. Two possible avenues of approach are presented: (1) a slope-deflection equation method based on equilibrium considerations; and (2) a moment distribution procedure. These techniques are well-known in connection with the analysis of the stability of frames subjected to loads at the joints only; the present paper represents an extension to the general case in which primary bending moments occur prior to buckling.
