Investigation of Chemistry by FTIR and NMR during the Natural Exposure Aging of Asphalt
A Natural Exposure Aging Test was studied by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), respectively. The asphalt binder was aged by rolling thin film oven before natural exposure ageing. Then the asphalt specimens with film thickness of 1250μm were flatly mounted on the roof of a building, located in Wuhan of China, which were exposed to natural sunlight and atmospheric conditions. It was found that that ageing causes the decrease of penetration, and increase of softening point. The FTIR results present that more carbonyl and sulphoxide groups appear, and the IC=O indices and IS=O indices increased with aging. The NMR results present that the aromatic structures were getting more condensed and highly substituted.
