The Brahmaputra River is one of the largest rivers of the world. It is international in character, originating in Tibet and flowing through India before reaching East Pakistan, and control of flooding from this river is a major problem. The problem has been considered by several experts who have expressed the opinion that flood protection must be provided by river embankment. The Brahmaputra right bank embankment and the proposed left bank embankment are described. For the study of river regime and for developing design criteria for the flood control projects, detailed hydrographical and hydrological surveys of the river have been in progress since 1964.
