Rebuilding of the Monongahela Bridge, at Pittsburgh, Pa.
The above work having been completed under my direction, I have the honor of presenting the following account of the same, having prepared it in the belief that it will interest members engaged in bridge construction. Smithfield Street bridge, across the Monongahela River, connects Central Pittsburgh with South Pittsburgh. The need of a bridge at this point existed early in the history of the city. A ferry accommodated the travel over the river for a long time. In 1810 a charter for a bridge was obtained, and in 1816 the first structure, a covered wooden bridge of eight spans, 188 feet each, was built.
