Stiffening Lock Gates by Prestressing Diagonals
A method is presented for the control of the warping or twisting of miteringtype navigation lock gates when the gates are swung through the water. The gate leaf is analyzed, and the function of the diagonal members in resisting torsional forces is explained. Expressions for torsional deflection and corresponding stresses in the diagonal members are developed; it is found that the prestressing of the diagonal members increases their effectiveness. The steps in applying the theory and the field technique for prestressing are presented.
