Model Tests to Determine Ground-Wind Loads on Launch Vehicles
Wind engineering formally emerged in the late 1960's, after Davenport developed analytical methods of modeling wind for loading applications, and Cermak developed means of modeling it physically in boundary-layer wind tunnels. Although this would lead eventually to solving problems as diverse as dispersion of atmospheric pollutants, ventilation of buildings, pedestrian comfort in urban environments, and distribution of snowdrifts around buildings and roadways, it was primarily developed as a tool for studying wind loads on tall buildings. Much of this development took place at Colorado State University (CSU), and later at Cermak Peterka Petersen, Inc. (CPP), in studying the dynamic response of launch vehicles to ground-wind loading. This paper describes the development of wind-tunnel tools for this purpose through case studies on a number of those projects.
