Investigating the Permanent Deformation Behavior of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures in Repeated Load Creep Tests
The flow number in dynamic creep tests is a criterion used for estimating the permanent deformation potential in hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. Different procedures have been introduced as standard test methods to assess the flow number of HMA mixtures. They vary in specimen size and geometry as well as the loading pattern that is applied on the specimens. The present study investigates the effects of specimen dimensions and loading pattern on the creep behavior of three different asphalt mixtures in unconfined repeated load creep tests. Identical asphalt concrete samples were tested in different unconfined dynamic creep tests and the results were compared to the ones in Hamburg wheel tracking test. Based on the above findings, a phenomenological relationship between the creep test results and the rut depth of asphalt concrete mixtures is presented and the most appropriate testing protocol is introduced.
