The Tall Building and the Urban Habitat
Cities have evolved throughout history because they are solutions. They cluster areas of work and housing for ease of communication and trade. They provide essential cultural, educational, and entertainment opportunities. The tall building is a key player in the city. In fact, in the largest cities, they are the major driving force with regard to the urban infrastructure. This paper provides examples of both the "good" and the "bad" with respect to the changing scene of the city during the Second Millennium and with particular reference to the high-rise. One finds that proper attention to infrastructure (primarily transportation), to environmental factors, and to the integration of housing within the urban core makes all the difference. The debilitating effect of uncontrolled fringe development stands out as a major warning to planners of cities of the Third Millennium. What makes a city work? That's the question.
