Tall buildings consume more energy per unit area than low rise building. This can be oberserved through the New York City energy disclosure ordinance. As a result, it is more difficult to get to lower energy/net zero in tall buildings. Innovative strategies for tall buildings are necessary and can include: Integrating buildings to natural and artificial environment: Natural environment of a tall building vary with height, creative energy systems must integrate a building with its natural dynamic environment. Also, the energy system of a building must integrate with the building to form a holistic organism. This can be illustrated through tall buildings similar to Pertamina Tower, which utilizes geothermal heat to get to net positive. However, building energy usage intensity increases with height, a true holistic integration needs to go beyond buildings. Integration beyond buildings: To advance to the highest level of sustainable design performance, 21st century tall buildings optimization needs to be happening at larger scales, from campuses to neighborhoods to cities. This provides the largest opportunity for optimization.
