Screening Test for Improved Calcium Chloride Deicer Resistance in Pervious Concrete
Pervious concrete pavement systems provide for transportation and stormwater management needs. However, calcium chloride deicers might cause deterioration in the pervious concrete layer. This research developed a laboratory method to screen different mixes or treatments for improved chemical resistance to calcium chloride deicer applications. Weekly, 200 mL test solutions were applied to ordinary Portland cement pervious concrete specimens with or without 25% fly ash substitution, and varying in age. Some specimens were tested in an ambient temperature room and some in a cold room at 4°C. The test solution was 3% by mass calcium chloride, and the control solutions were water and 3% sodium chloride solutions. Within two months, the test specimens showed visible deterioration under ambient conditions, but not in the cold room. The control specimens had little deterioration. This may be a simple laboratory method for preliminary screening of mix designs or treatments for improved calcium chloride resistance.
